Those "darned old disks" don't spin down

You have me rethinking my conservation strategy. I don't worry about the juice. I am mostly concerned with extending component life.

I guessed that a harddrive would last longer if it was not always spinning. Spinning constantly at 5400 RPM sounds like it would wear out a bearing...Actually I have never heard of harddrives with worn out bearings<g>

I find it very annoying having to wait for the harddrives to spin up. This machine is supposed to work for ME.

Why turn off the monitor? Why not just tone it down? My Viewsonic P815 makes a horrible sound when I turn it on. It does an automatic degauss. The literature says to only degauss infrequently as it may damage a monitor. I have been turning my monitor off. I am considering leaving it on and just toning down the brightness.

I use APC UPS with all of my machines. I always check to make sure the UPS has power conditioning capability. I have been under the impression that power conditioning will extend component life.

If APC UPS is a switching UPS what does it do with a voltage sag? I thought a power conditioner kept a constant voltage. Can this be done without switching to the battery?

Now if I can only figure out a way to stay connected to my ISP. I can not even compose a mid size post without GTE disconnecting me for inactivity. ATT is much better than GTE on this issue.

The things I want to keep running seem to be constantly shutting themselves off. I wish the lights in my house would work that way. Sense no movement for a half hour and off you go.<g>
