<OT> Raptor and Melinda, re: animal centers

Well you know Raptor, I thought the exact same thing (regarding these facilities being somewhat excessive as animal shelters bearing in mind that there are plenty people in the world that would like to live that way etc). Thats why I didnt comment really when I posted those clips from the brochure. I did ask the SPCA person working there and what she said was, that 98% of the cost of a facility like that is the structure and land (bay area real estate). There are a lot of earthquake codes that new bldgs must comply with so its very expensive to build a new structure here. And you need the land to be accessible otherwise no one will go there. Once you pay for all that, any additional cosmetic amenities are trivial, and can be amortized anyway. So it just becomes an issue of political correctness really, having nothing to do with money. She estimated the tvs, rugs, vcrs, cat trees etc probably cost about 10K on a $2 million facility. So, Im ok with that. The other animal shelters around here (Im thinking of Santa Clara county especially) are in dire need of a cash infusion like this. The Santa Clara facility is in an old warehouse or school or something in the middle of a warehouse section (nowhere near peoples homes) and its cold, etc. Dogs are barking and they arent happy there. The only way to improve is to build a completely new structure. My guess is SF was the same way before this was built.

BTW this was all Duffields personal $$ and has no bearing on options repriced at psft etc. However you feel about these types of facilities you have to give credit to Duffield for putting his money into something that he sees as neglected and being forthright about it. There are an awful lot of rich people around from high tech and I cant think of anything really significant that anybody else has conceived of as a charity recently. Also for these Duffield had to put some of his time into it vs just writing a check.

A disclaimer is that I am an animal lover and have a very spoiled cat! BTW on this topic of animals did anybody see that outpost.com commercial where they are shooting mice out of a cannon. After I stopped laughing I realized that is awfully inhumane. No idea how that commercial got past the PETA police.
