Yah, that primitive something is the fear of being eaten.
The local coyote pack lures pet doggies onto the hillside next to my bedroom window and dispatches them in a frenzy of snarling, howling and yelping. Taht will wake you from a sound sleep at 3 AM, I guarantee.
