Re "a compiler writer who has any idea how to take advantage of them, without causing unwanted side effects." How about "snooping" on writes in a multi-processor machine? I believe only a hardware cache can do this. I'm only a novice at this but I suspect snooping is also needed on DMA writes by hard-disks. Perhaps some of the EE types here can enlighten us.
