No Problem. Welcome aboard this discussion forum. Dissenting opinions are usually welcome, as long as the negative statements are justified by some substantial input, and you are not just poo-poohing the participants without some basis. I myself, have snarled back at people who come out of nowhere, just to call us names just for the sake of provocation.
As you read and find out more, you'll find that the patent concerns the method of downloading digital information for payment. The internet is one (recent and prominent) application for what the patent arguably covers. The patent is not prohibitive of communication and exchange of information on the internet - it's more to do with downloading pay for use materials. The patent also supposedly covers other forms of digital data transmission for payment, such as CD's, and others.
The morality of the situation ? Good question. It could very well be a opportunistic enterprise by the "3 men and a patent". The law is the law, however and as you realize, the legal semantics are about to be worked out in the 2 concurrent court cases. We will see what is to come..
The investing aspects ? This company, if successful, will be entitled to royalities of considerable amounts. A few % of the growing internet commerce paid as royalities to E-Data will result in substantial income for the company and it's shareholders. At the current price, the risk vs reward scenario is a very attractive one, and is the reason most of us are here.
Well, happy reading. The Oppedahl page has a part which allows you to subscribe to a mailing list for interested parties. They monitor this discussion forum, and funnily enough, my posts are often quoted to their readership as examples of what is occurring here. I don't know why. I would suggest joining this group, as they usually provide a quite timely update and synopsis of what is happening in the court cases, as well as occassional opinions about E-data's patent (mostly negative of course, but counterbalances the mostly postive opinions on this particular thread I suppose).
Hear from you in the future, no doubt.
Regards
