***OK, more off topic*** We should keep in mind that the USA did not go to rescue France from the clutches of the Nazis. Keep in mind that many of the French were in favor of the Nazis and helped pack Jews off to the camps. Some of the British, were in favour of Hitler. Indeed, even today, one could come up with a battalion or two in the USA who would join up.
The second world war was well underway before the USA joined in, apart from enjoying massive profits by selling things to the British. They were dragged in by the Japanese at Pearl Harbour. They were serving their own interests in Europe, not rescuing France. My Dad had been busy for a couple of years stopping Rommel in the desert of North Africa. Rommel was not there because he liked sand. There is a lot of oil in the middle east. The USA, as you are all aware from the avid interest in Iraq, is vitally interested in oil.
How do you think things would have gone if Hitler had taken over all the oil fields, Europe, and defeated Britain. Not that great for the USA.
So let's not try to pass on a bill for payment to the French 55 years later. New Zealand and my father were acting in their own interests too. The happy outcome was that by mutual action, the free world benefitted. But the USA, France and Britain don't owe New Zealand anything. Neither does France owe the USA anything.
My father liked freedom and had contempt for the criminal Nazis. So he volunteered in 1939 to go to the other side of the world to help out. Before they got too far. Unstopped, they would have arrived here eventually. Anyone feeling guilty and thinking they owe him a debt, please send checks to my Eketahuna address. He died a few years ago, but I'm an executor of his estate. I'll see the money is well looked after.
The battle now is to defeat the evil might of the totalitarian GSM Nazis who are trying to force us all into the VW-40 concentration camps. We will fight them in the fields, we'll fight them in the cities, we will fight them on the beaches and in the valleys of Eketahuna. We will never surrender.
Freedom will win again!
