Thanks Eric for the information., N.America no doubt has had its share of kimberlites., will probably dwarft S.Africa in the years to come. That is interesting about the premier being age dated to 1billion years and nearby pipes around 60mil. Guess kimberlites are like morel mushrooms., they like to erupt in the same geologic settings centuries later. Do you recall some time back Eric about the farmer finding a very large diamond in the UP of Michigan., I think it was around Grand Marie area., papers said it was whisked off to the Smithsonian., never heard anything more about it. Some people speculate it originated in Ontario. I wonder how many kimberlites are buried in N. Michigan., and S. Ontario. I was up to the old mines around Hancock Michigan several years back., did a little exploring in the copper talings.. found some nice small nodules of Datolite. Didnt know much about them at the time., but stopped into a rock and gem shop., believe it was around Copper Harbor., this ol guy started chuckling., when I showed him the nodules., he said come on back here., he had around 50 of them displayed in an oak case., halved. All the way from 3 inch diameter down to marble size pieces., some were blue., light lemon yellow., some pale pink as well. Seems these mineral occurances were prevelant in copper deposits. I still have them around the house. Very beautiful pieces when halved and polished. GJT |
