Re: the CHPS/Toshiba rumor.
I posted this on the CHPS thread but thought this might interest some of you.

Here's some more info to add to the whole Toshiba mess. I clipped this ariticle out of
the Wall Street Journal sometime last year, probably around August-Sept 1996. Sorry
I can't give an exact date because I clipped out the article and neglected to date it. I
just happened to find it now while digging through my folder of newspaper clippings.
But here it is verbatim:

"MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Chromatic Research Inc., an unusual Sillicon Valley
start-up backed by two big Asian companies, plans to supercharge home personal
computers with a multimedia chip that can replace several add-on circuit boards.

"The company said its Mpact "media engine" can carry out seven key functions at a
higher speed than existing chips or boards, with capabilities that include audio,
three-dimensional graphics, modem, telephony and video compression. Chromatic said
the chip would allow PC users to play more realistic games, carry out video
conferences and watch high-definition video.

"Chromatic's chips will be built and sold by Japan's Toshiba Corp. and South Korea's
LG Semicon Co., which are also major investors in the company. Other investors
include Silicon Vally venture capitalists Mohr Davidow Ventures and Merrill Pickard
Anderson & Eyre.

"Chromatic's business is based on selling the software that allows the chips to carry out
multiple functions, said chief executive Wes Patterson. Mr. Patterson said the company
has orders from five of the largest U.S. PC makers. The first PCs to use the chips will
be shipped in the second quarter of next year, he said." --- END

I don't know the whole Toshiba rumor, but if they did decide to dump CHPS in favor
of another chip, this might be the one.
With a bunch of companies coming out with 3D-chips this year, the competition 3D
chip market is going to get fierce.

Hope you all find this information useful. Good luck.
