Japan Telecom, Nissan, AirTouch to Form Phone Unit, Nikkei Says
Bloomberg News November 28, 1998, 10:51 p.m. PT Tokyo, Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Japan Telecom Co., Nissan Motor Co., and AirTouch Communications Inc. of the U.S. agreed to form a joint venture to develop and sell high-performance cellular phones in Japan, the Asahi newspaper reported, without citing sources. Japan Telecom will take the largest stake in a company formed under the venture, which initially will be capitalized at 200 million yen ($1.6 million). The three companies will seek more partners in the business, as they need more than 600 billion yen to operate the company, the newspaper said.
Japan Telecom is developing a new cellular phone standard called W-CDMA, or Wideband-Code Division Multiple Access, which it says will allow high-capacity data transfers and clearer voice transmission.
