ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 1998--Cabletron
Systems (NYSE:CS), the premier provider of enterprise-class
networking solutions, announced that the SmartSwitch Router (SSR)
8000, 8600 and 2000 family of solutions took top honors and won the
"Best of Breed" award in the most recent Gigabit Ethernet test
sponsored by InternetWeek Magazine (published November 16, 1998).
According to a recent Dell'Oro Group study, the SmartSwitch
Router holds an impressive 33% market share in the chassis-based Layer
3 switch category. Cabletron also is a leader in chassis-based Layer 3
Gigabit Ethernet ports shipped with 22.4% market share.
Competing against six other vendors including Extreme, Foundry
and Lucent, Cabletron's SSR once again successfully aced the
competition and was presented with an overall "A" for categories which
included installation, features, performance, manageability and value.
InternetWeek ran real-world solutions testing with a traffic
model obtained from the University of Hawaii's IT department. A
combination of streaming video and traffic patterns using Netcom
Systems Smartbits and application types emulated by Ganymede Software,
Inc., included different packet sizes and traffic patterns spanning
multiple subnets along with VLANs. Evaluating overall performance and
features, Quality of Service (QoS) was the focus of this test.

All members of the SSR family support 10/100/1000 switching and

application-level control, QoS, security and accounting of network
traffic.
