I don't recall a time period in which Christ's ideal "church" ever existed.. that is, after he died."
As found in the bible church members were making errors and committing sins which were challenged by Paul and by the apostles. Even Paul complained about the sin in his life that he wanted to conquor. We as humans and being sinful will make errors and commit sins even after becoming a Christian. If we ever say "I am holier than thou now" pride is the bad fruit we'd be bearing and one lousy testimony to non Christians. The first person to usually recognize hypocrisy in a Christian is a non Christian.
"Tell me what practices the churches should engage in...,"
Mark 16:15
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
James 1:27
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

There is much else that we "the church" aught to be doing which we find out by reading the bible. It is a manual for us and it tells us that "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God."
It's entire theme is very simple, pointing to salvation only by Jesus Christ and the need for us to be obedient to God for our own welfare just as any child needs to be obedient to a loving parent for their own welfare.
