In Europe, the caller always pays
European wireless stocks are perhaps even more popular than their wire-line cousins. And while wireless communications stocks have been booming worldwide, many analysts believe the European market is the most appealing, for three reasons.

•Most European cellular markets remain less competitive than U.S. markets. "Certainly Europe is less competitive," says J.P. Morgan analyst Iain Johnston. "In the U.S., there's typically a multi-player environment. Duopolies and oligopolies are more common in Europe."

•Europe has a uniform cellular technology. A European with a cell phone can be confident that the phone will work across the continent. That's not the case in the U.S.

•Europe has a "caller pays" convention. U.S. cell-phone users must ante up whether they make or receive a call. In Europe, the calling party always pays. "That encourages Europeans to leave their phones on and print their cell-phone numbers on their business cards," explains Bear, Stearns analyst Stuart Birdt.
