Once again, lml, thanks for the complete and thoughtful reply. A couple of minor points to clarify, if you don't mind.

I understand wire gage sizes just fine. What I was asking about was the impact of wire gage on local loop transmission distances. I assume that the impedance of fat wire is less than skinny wire, and hence the local loop echo problem is reduced? If so, then wouldn't the twist per unit length of twisted pair copper also impact the local loop transmission distance?

Even if both of our ILECs will not be able to provide G-Lite to us, it seems reasonable that using an ATU-R near our homes with an ATU-C capable of both G-Lite as well as HDSL would do the trick, unless there is something about the transmission distances between the ATUs that I haven't read about.

Bottom line of all the reading and discussions is that my enthusiasm for DSL is beginning to wane. Both from an investment perspective and for personal use. Cost, difficulty in implementation, and limited application base all lead me to think that it will take longer to deploy and have fewer users than I first thought. What a shame. It sure sounded like the perfect solution.
