Proof that cdmaOne is immune to recession and even depression.

koreatimes.co.kr
Korean Economic Summary:
Production of cars fell 27.7 percent in October from a year ago. Production of semiconductor chips reported a 74 percent increase year-to-year. Shipments of goods for domestic demand were down 16.6 percent while those for export were up 24.8 percent. Wholesale and retail sales fell 13.6 percent in October, drops of 17.4 percent in July and 16.7 percent in August. Shipments of consumer goods for domestic demand shrank 25.1 percent in October. Local machinery orders, the main indicator of corporate capital spending, dropped 25.8 percent in October, but the October decline was a major improvement from an average decline of 41.9 percent during the first half.

Local construction orders plunged 51.9 percent in October from a year ago, widening from a 41.1 percent fall in the first half. Land approved for construction in the month contracted 79.9 percent, the biggest decline since the statistics office began releasing such data in 1968.

Despite all this, cdmaOne sales in Korea are booming. And exports of cdmaOne handsets are booming too. QUALCOMM truly is at the centre of the New Paradigm. The old land-based, building-based, industrial revolution-based economies are finished. Not totally finished, but like agriculture which is still part of the economic landscape not where the real money is coming from.

You can see the extreme variation in what is successful in Korea and what is not. Then lay the same paradigm over the whole world. Throw in 3G and WirelessKnowledge with the Web World being right up QUALCOMM's alley. Check out The Q! mottoes "We're building the Wireless World", "Communication without limit", "The fun is just beginning".

World Recession Enhances Cellphone Sales.
By C A Prophit - Staff Reporter

Cellphone sales continue their rapid progress in New Zealand despite an economic slowdown imported from Asia. Korean visitors are down a whopping 82% from last year. Exports to Asian countries are also down substantially, with forest products leading the drop.

The 'Asian Contagion' has not affected cellphone sales anywhere. Economic research has shown that spending is displaced from luxury items such as travel, housing upgrades, restaurants and new cars to essentials which enhance financial security and ability to earn money. Cellphones are at the top of the list.

Bill Wood, a carpenter in Eketahuna, tells us that he had planned on taking his family on a trip to Disneyland and the USA to enjoy the northern summer, but decided to defer it because the building contracts were thinning and he was concerned to obtain new orders while he could. To ensure he didn't miss any orders, he bought a GSM cellphone with voice mail so that he never missed a customer call.

Until the Asian crisis he was pretty busy so was not going to bother with a cellphone as he didn't really need to generate new business. Now, he feels he can't be out of touch anytime.

Vodafone is planning a doubling of subscriber numbers in the next year as a result of a planned price and service promotion. With the advent of cdmaOne, it is likely that competition will increase enormously. Vodafone is positioning to meet the competition even before the cdmaOne networks are in place.

The cellular industry motto: "Hooray for Economic Depression!"

So we can expect carpenters around the world to be buying cellphones to get orders for houses which nobody wants to build [if I followed the logic properly]. Seriously though, cellphone sales really do seem to be unaffected by the economic woes around the world.

PS: Gee, quite a little jolt down in the markets after being up a bit since I started writing this! That should really push cellphone sales along.

***OT on USA saving the world in WWII***
Funnily enough, there was an article in the New Zealand Herald today saying that Ford and General Motors subsidiaries in Germany made a handsome profit from the Nazi war machine. "US auto firms labelled Nazi helpers" is the heading on page B1. They quickly switched to military gear when the war began. So USA companies were helping the enemy. 'Catch 22' covered the fun and games of who was bombing what and why in WWII.

"Historians and lawyers researching lawsuits for former prisoners of war have found evidence that major United States car manufacturers collaborated with the Nazis. Washington lawyer Michael Hausfeld, who is involved in a class action suit against Ford Motor Company by a former Russian prisoner and forced labourer, told the Washington Post similar legal action could be taken against General Motors." The article continued to detail the situation. I guess not everybody in the USA was so idealistic eh!

I think the concept that the USA has always been a country of ideals and idealists is no more true than for most countries and most people. Junko, my son's host Mum from Japan is a person of idealism. The family of Jessica, from New Caledonia [a French colonial outpost in Melanesia], who is staying with us now are people of ideals.

I'm sure people and countries around the world think of themselves as being countries of ideals and good values. I'm sure many recipients of napalm in Vietnam and children who received U238 in Hiroshima don't think the USA is obsessively idealistic. The level of crime and violence in Japan is tiny compared with the USA - which would suggest their levels of individual idealism are not too bad.

The 'peace in our time' of WWII was a sick joke, said by Neville, the British PM, who waved a stupid bit of paper, claiming 'peace in our time', not long before Germany invaded Poland.

The USA has got wonderful aspects and many in the world aspire to those aspects. As Ramsey says, a country of system rather than hierarchy is one of the best factors. But there is much not great.

Heck, I reckon I have much higher levels of idealism, to join the boasting parade, than any American I've ever heard of. In fact, apart from modesty, I think idealism is my most important characteristic. New Zealand is the best country on earth. Bar none. That's why we constantly have Americans trying to get in here. They are arriving now, to try to win the America's Cup back from the champions of the world. The USA is okay though!

[Wow, that was a good long post!]
