MetaCreations Rises on Expectations of Microsoft Distribution

Carpinteria, California, Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) --MetaCreations Corp. shares soared as much as threefold after the computer- graphics developer said it expected Microsoft Corp. to distribute its Internet software with Windows 98.

MetaCreations's shares rose 4 to 7 13/16 in late trading of 8.3 million, more than 60 times the three-month daily average. Earlier, the shares reached 11 3/8.

Carpinteria, California-based MetaCreations said it expects Microsoft to put its MetaStream software in the Windows operating system to enable programmers to create three-dimensional graphics. ''Pursuant to our licensing agreement with Microsoft, the MetaStream engine will ship as a component of the Windows operating system,'' said Bob Rice, vice president of business development at MetaCreations.

On June 2, MetaCreations and Microsoft announced that Microsoft licensed the Metastream 3-D graphics-file format. On July 21, MetaCreations said Microsoft would include MetaStream in its Chromeffects interactive-media technology.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft fell 4 1/16 to 124.
