I used to have an old Poli Sci professor who summed it up this way (likely plagiarized from one of his idols).

"The only difference between Communism and Capitalism is that with Communism, man exploits man.

With Capitalism it's the other way around."


I have always been fond of that quotation, and it pretty much sums up the premise that their is no pure private or public market system. Just shades of gray as pertinent as the rule of law established and followed by it practitioners.

As for politics influencing this mess, I would take a close look at Robert Rubin. He came out of Goldman-Sachs and does not strike me as a Republican.. :0)
