Chucky is correct. Iomega was one of three companies involved in developing the "floptical" technology which is now marketed as the LS-120 or Superdisk drive. They decided that it was too slow, as well as being cumbersome and expensive to manufacture. Plus, their market research led them to believe that backward compatibility was not an important feature. They sold the floptical tech, and cooked up the Zip instead.

The whole story, with many more details, is somewhere in this thread. It was probably posted two years ago or so.
