K7:

Report Card

1) First people doubted the existence of K7. That AMD engineers are jumping ship.

Answer: AMD stole the show at Microprocessor Forum with the K7 foils.

2) People doubted that K7 existed in silicon

Answer: AMD demoed K7 silicon at Comdex. Look at Tom's Hardware. Nice picture of the silicon.

3) People doubted K7 silicon would work

Answer: AMD demoed K7 system running DVD and benchmark at Comdex.

4) People doubted AMD can get chipset to support for K7 since Intel is of no help here.

Answer: Reporters came back taking pictures of K7 chipsets, Irongate and Cobra, running in K7 system.

5) People doubted K7 would have speed greater than 400MHz with air cooling.

Answer: AMD demoed a 500MHz (some reported even faster) K7 running without special cooling.

6) People doubted K7 would run faster than Intel system.

Answer: Tom's Hardware said that it is faster than any system Intel got and that includes a PII-500MHz.

Now people bring up

7) AMD will deliver K7 late and will not yield well with big K7 die size.

8) AMD will never successfully migrate to 0.18um

I wonder if AMD can pass 7) and 8) easily then what people will bring up next. I think they will say

9) People don't need the power of K7.
10) AMD is not known for "mission-critical"
11) AMD still doesn't have a roadmap beyond K7.
12) AMD doesn't have a 64-bit processor.
13) AMD can't deliver 20M K7/quarter like Intel.

.......
Blah, blah, blah.....

Just imagine what AMD stock would be if they succeed in 7) and 8), not to mention Intel stock.
