Samsung Begins Producing 3rd-Generation Alpha Chips
December 1, 1998 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has begun producing third-generation Alpha chips and will export the products to U.S.-based Compaq Computer Corp. in December.
The Korean company, which began production of second-generation Alpha chips in 1997, said the newest microprocessor can process data at twice the speed of the prior models.

"We expect sales of US$100 million in 1999 and US$1.5 billion in the next five years," a Samsung official said.

Alpha chips boast state-of-the-art data processing technology and can be used to screen high-definition moving pictures.
