Stephen, Thread-

Thanks for posting the articles about the human costs of the economic problems in Asia. The second of your articles- the one about young Kim Eun Joo and her family- particularly caught my interest, and I have been in touch with the reporter, Kevin Sullivan. A number of people throughout the world- Asia, France, the USA- also have contacted him. Like myself, people seem primarily interested in helping Eun Joo with her musical education.

I intend to help, but acting alone I cannot provide for this talented girl's educational needs. The education of a violinist represents a considerable investment even to most families that can afford it. Are there others on this thread who value musical artistry and the struggle to achieve it who would consider supporting Eun Joo? I am uncertain how best to proceed, and at this point would simply like ideas on how to render effective assistance. I ask, therefore, that if you might have an interest in participating in an Eun Joo support group that you contact me through a private communication. My immediate goal is both to elicit constructive ideas and to gauge the interest from cyberspace .

Among my ideas are to approach Brad with the prospect of opening a thread to SI members and non-members alike to facilitate discussion. I want to clear this with the family first, however. I also would like to approach a non-profit to open a fund dedicated to Eun Joo's education which would allow U.S. donors to write-off any financial contributions. Although I know of one or two non-profits that I could approach, I would be interested if anyone knows others that could be contacted to offer their good offices (while the organizations I have in mind might be willing to do it, it's not quite within their province).

Here's an opportunity for the 'Net's premier financial discussion site to demonstrate its members concerns transcend the confines of power and money. Will you consider helping?

Larry
