To tell you the truth I am quite confused by the situation. Gemstar's announcement of the lawsuit against GIC is a non-announcement since we all know that Gemstar already has a case against GIC and its waiting on arbitration.
OTOH, SONY's announcement of support for GIC's DCT5000, and its intent to buy an equity muddies the water quite a bit.
As it stands, imho, GIC is almost guaranteed to lose the case and will end up paying tonnes of damages etc. This would get reflected in SONY's bottom line and its unlikely that SONY would want to take such a suicidal step without a plan. Something's up that we investors are not yet privy to, and I plan to wait and see. Certainly would increase the volatility of GIC, SNE and GMSTF stocks!

I hate to be a rumor monger(and certainly am not privy to any insider info.) but it looks like GMSTF and SONY are headed for an alliance in which SONY will have a "all-you-can-eat" deal with GMSTF(similar to THMSON -GMSTF alliance) in exchange for SONY paying a sizable lump sum. GIC's intransigence will be forgiven(for a price ofcourse)and will either be covered under a licensing agreement.
