i.LINK Interface Integrated with Hard Disk Drive in Cooperation with Sony
Today, Quantum Corporation (Nasdaq/NMS:QNTM) announces a technology demonstration of hard disk drive storage for consumer electronics A/V applications.
Quantum, in cooperation with Sony U.S. Research Laboratories, is developing storage technology that integrates the i.LINK (IEEE-1394) interface with Quantum's hard disk drives. The two companies will jointly demonstrate this technology at the Western Show on Dec. 2-4, in Anaheim, Calif.
"We are working with Quantum on this new application of i.LINK technology because Quantum is clearly one of the leaders in the hard disk drive industry, and has demonstrated a commitment to i.LINK as part of their new storage product plans," said Scott Smyers, vice-president of Sony's Interconnect Architecture Lab.
Quantum's A/V hard disk drive technology incorporates a number of firsts, including: direct isochronous recording that allows the HDD to record and play back digital video and audio as easily as a VCR; dual-streaming for simultaneous recording and play back of video content; and easy "plug and play" compatibility with other consumer A/V devices across the i.LINK interface.
"We are very excited about supporting the i.LINK interface for AV electronic appliances," said Tony Francesca, general manager and vice president of Quantum's Consumer Electronics Storage Business Unit (CESBU). "With Sony's cooperation for integrating the i.LINK interface with Quantum's storage technologies, Quantum will produce new consumer electronics storage products that will have enormous impact on home entertainment electronics."
By direct connection to i.LINK compatible consumer devices, Quantum's technology enables the following capability in the home entertainment center:
-- instantly replay a scene
-- pause a live broadcast program
-- jump to a specific program or scene instantly
-- play one program while recording another
-- play the beginning of a program that is still recording
