Realist, I have never owned a stock that had a short squeeze so have no examples. I do know that when the transfer agent receives a request to register more shares than is outstanding, he must contact the SEC who in turn gives all brokerage houses 3 business days to clean up their books-ie require shorts to cover to make up the difference.

I have been through this before!

If a MM is "naked shorting" and can't cough up "real" shares to a brokerage house for delivery to a customer, the brokerage house will go into the open market, buy at market price (whatever it is!!) and send the MM the bill....and he better pay up or else he will be subject to sanctions by the SEC AND lose the brokerage house's business!
