Dr. Lett wrote an article in the August 1997 issue of The Engineering and Mining Journal. Here are a few excerpts.

COULD MOTHER NATURE BE THE VILLAIN AT BUSANG?

A recent article in May 1997 issue of E&MJ entitled "Mine: A Hole in the Ground With a Fool at the Bottom and a Liar at the Top?" describes in some detail a number of problems that Bre-X Minerals has encountered with the Busang gold property, located on the island of Borneo. Although there may have been transgressions involved on the part of Bre-X, it is also quite possible that it may have inadvertently stumbled onto an exceptional example of what, at our laboratory, is referred to as precursor ore.

Description of Precursor Ore

This unrecognized ore types is widespread in occurrence and distribution and has been studied in this laboratory from examples located largely within the Pacific Basin and adjacent areas. The uniqueness of precursor ores is due to the presence of a naturally occurring ion exchange substrate, in the form of minute particles of amorphous colloidal silica (a.c.s.), onto which are chemisorbed counterions of transition and other elements. For the most part, the existence and significance of these naturally occurring counterions has not been previously recorded in the literature.

No one that I have spoken to in the academic community has any idea what a couterion is. Maybe Laser knows? VBG

He was also involved with Naxos and was trying to figure a way to grind their ore all down to something like -400 mesh before he put it through his proprietary process.
