Hi Kemble,
He understands what Dell's mission has been since day one. "A company has to ask itself where it adds its value and define that value-add very [narrowly]," asserts Dell. "To us, it is delivering computer solutions. We keep our focus on doing what we do best and ask ourselves what is the most efficient way" to do things.
Looks like a pretty hip CEO!
No doubt in my mind he is the focal point of the company but he is not just a one man wonder from what I can see, he is who he is and he and the company will be measured as one chooses.
I am not in the camp that says no way could mistakes not have been made. Perhaps there are or were mistakes that were made and corrected and or mistake(s)that were made and not corrected. One would have to agree that there is much evidence to conclude that Dell as a company has done remarkably well. That had to be due, in part to Dell's management.
I for one, have no quarrel with his placing by Computer Reseller as the number one CEO. However, I do think that if there is an impression that Dell is a one man show, hopefully articles of this type, if they are to be believed, will correct that assumption.
Dell at this stage is certainly more narrow in scope than an IBM, but as Louis Gerstner is the head of that organization , there is the Sam Palmisno type to tap if needed, to step in Louis spot. There is obvious talent available to Dell to do similarly should the unlike occurrence to warrant that arises.
Computer Reseller correctly included and gave credit to Dell's Mort Toper and Kevin Rollins as they should. Perhaps more emphasis could have been made in this area elsewhere. Certainly Michael has publicly stated and given credit to those in his organization that have helped him to get Dell to where it is thus far.
I am encouraged to see increasing evidence that he continues to be willing to bring some additional outside talent into his organization. When a company has much in the way of talent and that talent is pushing in the same direction, much more can and should be accomplished.
Sincere Regards,
QT
