In the neighborhoods where the go toe-to-toe, it looks like RCN is kicking some major butt (witness their subscriber growth rate). While RCN is only in three towns around Boston, they are building here as fast as humanly possible.
They are just getting started in my home town of Newton, and so I don't expect to have their triple-play option on my street until later next year. But I can tell you, I'll be signing up for all three services (phone, cable and internet (yes, fiber connect) the day after it's available.
I see Time Warner, one of the three who've monopolized individual towns in greater Boston, is raising rates everywhere EXCEPT in Sommerville, where they are feeling the RCN pinch.
Stepping back, it's clear (to me) that it's only a matter of time before RCN stuffs it to Bell Atlantic, the local cable operators, and isp's (aol included). It's all about choice, and it's finally arriving. Moreover, on a platform that supports future technologies.
