Sad to report, "reference" can be used as a transitive verb. The usage, according to latest Webster's Collegiate, dates back to 1891. But it has quite a different meaning from the one in which it is employed in the post you were responding to, namely:

1 a : to supply with references b : to cite in or as a reference
2 : to put in a form (as a table) adapted to easy reference

In short, I have referenced Webster's Collegiate in this post. (Ugh. Still sounds ugly.)
