Intel's plans for i740...
found more about the piece of news that Intel is dropping the i740... zdnet.com
Intel Eyes $399 Celeron PC
..... One of the ways Intel will take cost out of PCs is through integration. For example, next year it will release a low-cost chip set, code-named Whitney, that includes embedded three-dimensional graphics.
Intel will discontinue development of low-end dedicated graphics processors such as the i740, which it released early this year. ......
If I remember correctly, Whitney was supposed to be the "successor" to the i740. Apparently, Intel has expanded Whitney's capabilities to include an entire chipset.
My take... just another embedded graphics chip ala ATI Rage Pro; minimal 3d capabilities (more or less banshee level), running on some derivative of the AGP bus (probably 2x), using system memory in lieu of dedicated graphics memory, nothing to worry about... just another box to upgrade to VoodooX bandwagon =)
(IMHO In the coming year, Intel is gonna get slaughtered in the CPU sector if AMD doesn't screw up it's current roadmap)

Will someone take that Robbie Stephens dude out, spank him, and tell him to stop? =) (i wonder when he'll be done unloading...) |
