Polishers are probably part of the technology buys. For INTC, the number of new polishers required will be more modest than for many companies because INTC already uses CMP technology for oxide, tungsten, STI, and poly. The 0.18 micron technology probably uses a bit more CMP due to an additional metal layer or so, but they can reuse many of the same polishers that they use now for 0.25 micron technologies.

One other point about INTC's reuse strategy--it makes it more likely that SpeedFam-IPEC's tools will continue to be used. It's an additional barrier to entry for competitors. I'd guess that SFAM will maintain half of the business, and AMAT will win the other half, but the reuse strategy strengthens their chances of keeping the entire business.
