I saw an interesting chart in the Investor's Business Daily "Computer's & Technology" section today. It was a survey by Deloitte & Touche LLP of 1442 chief information technology officers worldwide. The systems technologies cited as most important to organizational decision making and when the technologies will be implemented are:

Data warehousing: 25% now, 70% in two years
Document Management: 18% now, 65% in two years
Workflow Management: 15% now, 60% in two years
Object Oriented Technology 16% now, 55% in two years
Multimedia: 8% now, 38% in two years
Wireless data communication
Automated Call centers
Hand Held Computers
Expert Systems
...

Open Text Intranet technology covers 3 of the top 4 areas cited. Along with being a Document Management, Workflow application, Livelink was written in a very robust proprietary Object Oriented (OO) programming language called "Oscript" that gives customers the opportunity to customize the application to their unique requirements. Being that it is written in an OO is a strong selling point and definitely helps when they go head to head with Documentum and Lotus Notes for a sale.

It's also important to note that the survey was worldwide which indicates they will have a strong global market for years to come. As more and more companies look to document management and workflow as a way to compete globally, Open Text's technology lead should allow them to become the dominate player in this market.
