"Ottawa chooses Mpact for E-commerce service"

Rocki, here's the article White Shoes had mentioned - if it's right, we should be hearing something official this week.

TYLER HAMILTON The Globe and Mail

Mpact Immedia Corp. has beat out a long list of competitors to become the first official electronic commerce service provider for the federal government.

Anne Belliveau, general manager of corporate communications at Mpact Immedia, said the company was chosen by Industry Canada to turn its popular Strategis Web site into an area where business information and services could be purchased over the Internet.

Strategis is the largest business information Web site in Canada in terms of volume -- with more than three million documents.

When Mpact Immedia has done its work on the Internet site, people will be able to use it to register for bankruptcy, file for patents, trademarks, copyrights and federal incorporation, purchase various licences and do data base searches -- paying fees for the service.

"It is an important contract in terms of numbers, as well as in terms of doing business with government," said Ms. Belliveau, who would not disclose the amount of the contract until it is officially signed next week. "We didn't want to say anything because the contract isn't signed yet.

Montreal-based Mpact Immedia, a subsidiary of Bell Canada, will get paid to install the E-commerce infrastructure for the Strategis site and will charge licencing fees for software.

The company also will earn a transaction fee for each purchase made over the Strategis.

Ms. Belliveau said this first contract puts the company in favour with the federal government as it rolls out future electronic commerce projects across departments.

The company beat out a long list of well-established firms, including Deloitte & Touche, Andersen Consulting, IBM Canada Ltd., Bank of Montreal's Cebra Inc. and AT&'T Canada Long Distance Services Co.
