Computer hardware and software, travel and books will account for almost 80 percent of the $4.5 billion worth of online retail sales this year, according to market researcher eMarketer. Computer hardware and software sales, alone, account for $1.65 billion, or 36.5 percent of total sales. Looking ahead to 2002, eMarketer forecasts that travel spending will move into first place, while the top-ranked computer segment will slip to third. "Travel is not only a big-ticket, big consideration item," said eMarketer statsmaster Geoffrey Ramsey. "It is a highly research-intensive product requiring consumers to carefully evaluate multiple options, such as destination point, airport, airline carrier, hotel and car rentals. The Internet can deliver this information faster than any other medium." eMarketer expects total e-commerce revenues in 2002 to be $7 billion."
