You have Pagels right. It's yet another convoluted theory that brings in an unknown author writing under Paul's name, makes you wonder whatever happened to Occam's Razor. There were plenty of people who knew the authors of the new testament letters; the first of the Ante-Nicene church fathers were students of the Apostles, and then they had students... it would have been difficult if not impossible to smuggle in writing from outside the circle of the early church. Gnosticism is not unique to Christianity, Judaism and some pagan religions also served as hosts for its ideas. The gnostics were able to overlay their ideas of aeons and demiurges and whatever onto a number of other religions. Since Paul denounces the teachings of a prominent gnostic in his letters, this was apparently happening even as he was making his journeys. I don't think it even qualifies as a heresy, as it's really a religious system that predates Christianity.
