To all: More details on the China deal.......

nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com
December 1, 1998 (HONG KONG) -- Ascend Communications Inc. of Alameda, Calif. recently obtained the phase II contract to further develop the ATM/frame relay broadband multiservices network in China's Zhejiang province.
The project is the second phase of Zhejiang's public network, which builds upon the first phase. The initial phase covers 12 locations in 11 cities in Zhejiang, including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jinhua, Jiaxing and Shaoxing.

The coverage planned for the second phase will extend to 63 cities with over 5,000 sites. In addition to providing ATM/frame relay permanent virtual circuit (PVC) and switched virtual connection (SVC) services, the network will ensure high quality IP service. It also will cover other value-added WAN communication services such as point-to-point protocol (PPP) access and integrated services digital network (ISDN) access.

Additionally, it will be the first of its kind in China to combine ATM, frame relay and IP technologies to provide such multiple services on a public network at a provincial level.

In the first phase, Ascend provided switching equipment for Chinanet to set up its first ATM-based relay framework. Based on the phase I infrastructure, phase II development will involve multiple units of CBX 500, B-STDX 9000, B-STDX 8000, SA-600, SA-100 and IP Navigator technologies.

The phase II framework will support large numbers of leased lines, reduce the number of necessary WAN interfaces and enhance the network's overall reliability and performance.
