I'm definitely guessing, though its based upon my own experience in high tech development that a lead of 3 years just generally doesn't occur. Knowledge is too widespread, engineers and scientists are too portable and competition is too fierce for this type of lead in a technology business to take place, once that technology has reached its production phase.
