NEC Unveils 128MB DDR DRAM Chips Martyn Williams, Newsbytes 12/01/98 Newsbytes News Network (c) Copyright 1998 Post-Newsweek Business Information, Inc. All rights reserved. TOKYO, JAPAN, 1998 DEC 1 (NB). NEC Corp. [TOKYO:6701] has begun sampling new 128 megabit double - data rate (DDR) synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chips. The chips will enter mass production in March, 1999.
The chips are produced on a 0.22 micron rule production line, run off a 133 megahertz clock and can deliver 266 megabits per second performance. NEC will offer three versions of the new chips, each in a different internal configuration.
When mass production begins in March, NEC will begin ramping up production to 500,000 units per month. Samples of the chips are priced at 10,000 yen (US$82) in Japan.
The DDR specification, standardized by the Joint Electronic Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) in late 1997, is gaining support among chip manufacturers and personal computer makers as a next-generation memory chip system. In addition to NEC, chip makers backing the format include Fujitsu, Hitachi, Hyundai, IBM, LG, Micron, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Siemens, and Toshiba. On Monday this week, Silicon Graphics announced support for system designs using DDR SDRAM technology. |
