Ericsson introduces new system for safe and fast wireless access to local area networks

(I'm back after a few days away finding out more info, will report at a later date)

Ericsson is now introducing a system for Wireless LAN. The system is optimized for high-speed wireless data communications, enabling new possibilities for the wireless office. Users can quickly get safe laptop access to intranet or Internet services from different offices or public 'hot spots' like airports.

By entering the market for WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) Ericsson is expanding its wireless office product portfolio with secure wireless datacom capabilities. The system fully supports IP-based communications and is an attractive complement to current and future wireless wide area networks.

Ericsson's security solution ensures protection against information tapping and illegal access to LANs. With an in-house developed Firewall Unit the system offers an integrated WLAN security solution, which has not been available on the market before. Even when a user moves between different access points in the network the connection is stable and kept secure.

The WLAN offering enables a more flexible working environment; users can for example move a computer from the desk to a conference room without changing network settings. Equally attractive - it enables usage completely without cables. Included in the system is a range of products enabling fully tailored solutions.

The system is currently being shown live at Arlanda airport in Stockholm, Sweden as well as downtown in an office building hosting companies.

With the increasing usage of laptops, price pressure and further improved computer performance, the needs of organizations to offer employees mobile access are increasing. The WLAN infrastructure market is estimated to reach USD 1 billion by year 2000.
