Maurice, I don't understand your arithmetic: $4.2 billion divided by $45 = 93 million. I suppose they would be ubiquitous if one in three people in the US owned one.

The price contracted at auction seemed high to me when announced, and still does. Don't they have to compete against others who succeeded with lessor bids?

I am reassured by Tom's posting that Qcom is in to nextwave for just $25 m. If Nextwave fails to raise the finance, then Qcom loses its $25 m. - not a big-deal in my opinion. The govt. would presumably reposess and re-auction the licenses as quickly as possible - it would be embarassed. The licenses would be resold for less. The govt would lose, and private industry would retain a larger proportion of what the public is prepared to pay for mobile communications. Maybe Qcom stockholders should hope for Nextwave's failure ;-)?
