I am not sure I understood everything you said about differentiation. And not clear why autos are a good comparison. People buy cars for all sorts of status and other reasons that marketers can use to differentiate/create and maintain market share. Likewise, a Seiko can tell time as well as as a Rolex but no amout of juggling on Seiko's part is going to make one bit of difference to Rolex. Who buys drives for similar extraneous reasons? Capacity use in branded consumer goods (all of whom can churn out more product than they do) is subject to a whole different universe of constraints than in tech component manufacture, don't you think?

EDIT: Consider "Intel Inside" when thinking about branding in the price-sensitive segment.
