PLANE FAILURE

A four engined jet was on a trans-Atlantic flight when the #4 engine shut down. The subtle change in noise levels prompted the captain to apprise the passengers of what had happened and to reassure the passengers that the plane was fully capable under three engines, and that it wasn't all that rare an occurrence. The biggest impact was that their flying time would be increased by about an hour. A while later, the #2 engine unexplicitly shut down. The captain again gave the passengers reassurance that the FAA fully tests these situations and, again, the plane was fully functional under two engines, but the flying time would be further increased. A while later, the unthinkable happened. The #1 engine also shut down. The captain told the passengers that this was unprecedented, but the aircraft's flight manual covered the situation for operating the aircraft on one engine. The pilot said the arrival time would be further delayed. One not-too-sober passenger leaned over to his neighbor and said "If we lose another engine, we'll be up here all day".
