Cisco Systems and Novell: A maker of network routers, switches and software, Cisco believes the network, not the PC, will become the platform of the future. To accomplish this, Cisco must further invade the enterprise market. Enter Novell, developer of NDS, the leading directory software. Cisco is collaborating with Microsoft on directory software, but the collaboration is failing so far. NDS is better -- and worth snapping up Novell to get. Right now, Cisco routers sit at the "edge" of corporate networks. Taking over Novell's legacy business would extend Cisco much more deeply into the enterprise.
