I am very bullish on the ZIPs myself and I agree with most of your comments. I also believe that once everyone is online & the bandwidth is expanded via ASDL & Fiber, most software purchasing will be done via downloads. But until then, the CD-ROM is the cheapest way to distribute software. Now, if the cost of a ZIP disc to a distributor were to go down to the level of CD-ROM (which I recall was around 10-12 cents) it will be a different story. When we used the 3.5 diskettes, MS-Office was coming with some 30 diskettes. Now the entire thing is on a single CD. Imagine how this reduced the cost to MSFT!

This isn't to say that every PC shall not have a ZIP in the mean time, there are lots of uses for the ZIP that other media cannot satisfy today....
