Mary, How soon do you think IA-64 will reach high end desktop and workstations? It is not obvious that IA-64 offers any advantage on the desktop. The value of the EPIC architecture lies in the fact that some server software can be cleanly divided into intermingled threads. If IA-64 offers no significant performance advantage over the huge existing x86 software base, there is no reason to expect it to be any more successful on the desktop than any other RISC architecture.
