Iris scan versus finger scan . . . .
I agree with J. Saf that fingerprints will be useful more often than eye scans, although in ATMs eye scans will be relatively strong.
Sometimes you see claims that iris scans, with about 230 points of reference, are more accurate than fingerprints, with less than 100 points of reference. This is kind of a silly comparison.
The real question is, Do fingerprints give the kind of accuracy that is needed for all relevant purposes? The answer, of course, is yes. If the FBI can build an extremely accurate AFIS data base using a one:many search approach (ID'ing and authenticating) with perhaps 100 million people on it, and this information is held to be reliable enough to be used in criminal court, then simple one:one fingerprint authentications on databases that are smaller by many orders of magnitude are surely good enough. In other words, if iris ID is better, it doesn't matter; it doesn't add any value. |
