BAGHDAD (AP)--The Iraqi government was reported Thursday to have approved the importation of the anti-impotence pill Viagra via the private sector. The newspaper Al-Zawra said the Health Ministry has no objection to the pill manufactured by New York-based Pfizer coming into Iraq, likely through private pharmacies and hospitals. "The blue pill is in demand by many Iraqis," the weekly quoted an unnamed ministry official as saying. He suggested prescriptions would be required. The official said the government would not bring Viagra in because it is not "a badly needed humanitarian item." Most of Iraq's food and medicine is imported under the U.N.-approved oil-for-food program, which allows Iraq to sell limited quantities of oil to buy necessities for its 22 million people. The sanctions, imposed to punish Iraq for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait, limit oil sales, ban air travel and bar most international financial transactions. Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. (PFE).
