I think they can do both, for a while. However, as time goes on, we may find that IDX has spent a lot of time and money working within a losing system -- whichever one it is. Meanwhile, there may be competitors cropping up in the ultimately winning approach that would not have had a good opportunity to compete had IDX gone the right way to begin with.

My immediate concern is a possible dichotomy between Oracle and Compaq customers. I don't know if the applications here are similar or dissimilar. If they are similar enough, I can see Oracle customers asking why they should pay almost $400 for a reader that the company sells in a different form for $100.

On the bright side, I believe IDX has the lowest cost approach in each track: $99 on the IDT non-CPU technology, and $399 on the F3.
