Voltaire, you suggested that I agree that it takes a concerted effort on their part but with houses holding 30 or 40 million shares of certain stocks such as Dell, it is not difficult to conceive.

Now, so far as I know there is only one way to bring down the price of large cap stocks: sell a lot of them. How do you do that and make money at it? Second, just think about the consequences of what you are saying. At a minimum these houses would need to control huge amounts of of the nifty fifty in inventory, plus a bunch of large cap stocks like CSCO, DELL, INTC, and MSFT. LTC in playing a single hedged position (the failed TLAB/CIEN merger) lost billions. How do you imagine that outfits like GSCO can successfully collude to attempt to control the entire market? It just doesn't make sense.
