12-04-98 Mobile phone, PC makers enjoy brisk sales

Korea's major information and communication equipment manufacturers have seen their sales grow substantially this year thanks to brisk exports and explosive growth in the number of mobile phone subscribers, industry sources said yesterday. Samsung Electronics Co., which controls over half of the mobile phone market in the country, expects to sell more than 5.2 trillion won ($4.19 billion) in information and communication related products this year, up by 200 billion won from last year.LG Information and Communications is likely to record 2.3 trillion won in total sales this year, with exports projected to expand to $100 million.

The firm's total revenue came to 1.94 trillion won last year. Hyundai Electronics also expects to see its total sales nearly double from last year's tally to 900 billion won from 456 billion won, with its products gaining popularity locally as well as in the global market. The company projects its sales to expand sizably with its total exports slated to reach $440 million next years, including $90 million dollars in system products.

Daewoo Telecom Ltd. is likely to record anywhere from 1.55 trillion won to 1.6 trillion won in total sales this year, thanks to brisk pc equipment exports, up from 1.15 trillion won last year. The company projects that its PC exports will grow to one million units next year from an estimated 230,000 sets this year, bringing the company's total sales to about 2 trillion won next year.
