Happy Birthday

I saw you today
my longtime lover
walking down the street
you turned the corner ahead of me
when I reached it
you were gone.

You telephoned me
this evening,
I heard the last ring
as my key was in the lock
I rushed to answer
too late.

And yesterday
you were in a crowd
I came up behind you
to touch your long blonde hair
bur cigarette smoke was rising, and
just in time I knew you
were someone else.

I've been meaning to tell you
my longtime lover
of how your love lifted me to my higher self
of how your goodness made me strong, and true

and you know, my longtime lover
how the cooling of the embers has
burned my heart but
do you know, you must know, I must tell you

I would never trade my pain
bruises and wounds for the gain
of never having loved you, and so
Happy Birthday.
