Sherry, I should have explained: UPS=uninterruptible power supply.
It plugs into the wall and you plug your PC and monitor into it.
There's a rechargable battery inside which can power the PC and
monitor for about 10 minutes after a power outage. So if you are
there at the time, you have time to shut the PC down normally.
I've seen those advertised for around $60. Mine is the APC
Back-UPS 280. The printer doesn't need this protection, because
you can always restart a print job.

The surge protector only helps against voltage spikes, not against
outages.
